What is IVR?
IVR, or Interactive Voice Response, is simply a method of extracting and imparting data via the spoken voice, over a telephone line. IVR is a capability of many larger, more complex telecommunications systems. Most IVR systems also feature database or XML connectivity, which allows the system to extract information from a server "on-the-fly" in response to a caller query.

If you've ever called, for example, a bank-by-phone service to retrieve your balance, you've used an IVR system. You call the number, and the call is answered by a recording, which prompts you for your account number and asks what information you want. You provide this input, and the bank's IVR system replies using customized voice prompts, something like this:

"Your current balance is...one thousand...two hundred... twenty-seven...dollars...and...eighty-nine...cents."

Each segment of the response is actually a seperate voice recording. A large IVR system may have hundreds, or even thousands, of recordings -- spoken numbers, dates, words like "dollar" and "cents", and so on. Sophisticated software and voice servers are used to assemble these recordings and play them back as declarative statements.

What are ACD and telephony prompts?
ACD, or Automated Call Distribution, is a method employed by many call centers which allows an administrator to set specific rules as to how incoming calls are handled by a system. Many ACD systems use custom recordings to provide feedback to callers. Telephony prompts are simply any other customized recorded prompts used by a telephone system, such as replacements for the standard system recordings supplied by the manufacturer.
